The rest of the park is well worth a look as the history & flora is really neat. Sunsets here are now best viewed from the new pavilion or on some of the trails overlooking the lake! Those are unaffected by whatever mayhem is going down on the shore, and the views are even more gorgeous.ĭue to staffing issues the beach has closed for swimming for this year much earlier than normal. Regardless of your personal opinion on whether walking/wading is wrong or not, it severely detracts from the peaceful sunset when a megaphone is in your ear. The water closes a little bit before sunset, and you’ll definitely know about it from IDNR folks out on four wheelers screaming at people wading in the water/walking along the shore to get out. However, if you’re trying to enjoy a nice peaceful sunset on the beach itself, I’d recommend against it. The park has done a lot of beautiful renovations and upgrades on West Beach! The new pavilion is wonderful as are the restaurants and bar. It was definitely worth a day trip once and i see the value of having a yearly pass if you were local as there is enough variety to keep the kids entertained year round. Quality is about as expected for a large event space like this. As for Food, the cafeteria/Food Court had many options between salad and sandwiches to pasta/pizza and burgers and chicken tenders. i could see the outdoor space being even more entertaining as the summer heat moves out. Even if you are art connoisseurs or history buffs, touring a museum can be a lot of fun, especially as a birthday idea for a rainy day. The massive sports themed tree was a hit for the kids as we took a break in the shade. I was expecting a bit more from the pedal kart track but i understand as there is a lot of people they are trying to push through and give opportunity to. The minigolf courses were great value as it was included in the price of admission. i saw attendants working the basketball courts trying to drum up group games and there are plenty of smaller hoops to allow younger kids to feel their basketball dreams coming alive. Everything was full but at the same time, was quite efficient to ensure everyone could participate. Once we got outside, the crowds really showed. The blown glass exhibit was a cool visual. The American Pop and Gaming areas were big hits. Presenter was great but they didn't actually make anything. We watched a traditional Greek cookie recipe presentation. Once we got to the Greece exhibit with all the play areas, that's when the kids really lit up and enjoyed their time. As an adult, I found it interesting to well put together but for my kids, maybe just ours, it didn't grab their attention as much as the other exhibits. The first and primary exhibit was the Dinosaurs. We had no issues with parking as we got there right as the doors opened.
